In School Sports: Handball
This week, we will take a look at one of the famous sports in the world, handball. Handball is played in over 150 countries, it is an invasion game. The object of the game is for your team to score more goals than the opposing team. The easiest way to describe handball is, "soccer with the hands instead of the feet." Much like soccer, it can be both physical and fast, with balls being thrown at speeds approaching 65 miles per hour. The sport used to be played on a large turf field with 11 players on each side, but has recently been moved indoors and played with seven players, which speeds the game up even more.
At ICS, classes MYP4’s and MYPP2’s are studying handball as a part of unit 1 which is coming to an end this half term. Last Thursday on the 15th of October, there was a match between the best handball players From both classes against Mr Samir, Mr Richard and 5 other players from the two classes. The dream team beat the teacher's team by 6-2. The teachers are looking forward to a rematch on Monday the 19th of October. However, as an opponent I think they are still going to lose. Stay tuned and stay updated. http://www.infoplease.com/spot/summer-olympics-team-handball.html By: Abdelrahman (MYP4) |

Fashion Police:
This Thursday, there were two people whose outfit looked very good and simple.
One of the people whose outfit I really liked were Mariam Ali (MYP2). She was wearing a lovely yellow v-necked knitted sweater, paired with a nice combination of dark blue jeans and black laced boots. The yellow sweater fits for any part of the year except summer since you won't be needing any sweaters in hot seasons. The other female student whose outfit I was very interested in is Teresa Chimuco in DP1. Her outfit was classy yet deprived. She wore a denim jacket and a loose blue shirt. She differentiated her look by wearing a black pair of jeans and black pair of flat shoes with a white sole.

Oxford Sex Organisation Activities in London. Oxford sex gang is an organisation that runs in London. These groups of people were known to sexually assault young females aged 11 years old and above by using extremely appalling strategies in order to gain their trust. According to the BBC news, victims of their gang activities totalled up to 373 and counting. One of the strategies that were used by the gang was to befriend naive girls and get close to them by being their friends or boyfriends. “At the start they made out like they wanted to be your friend. Then the intensity crept up. They would put you off everybody. They would say your family was your enemy, your friends were your enemies.” Commented Katie who was a victim of the organisation’s sexual activity to Daily Mail. After gaining Katie’s trust, the two Pakistani men lured her into going out with them. She was brought to Nanford guest house and experienced events that a 12 year old girl should never go through. She told the media about her experience in being kidnapped by the sex deprived men. She was treated brutally and was used as a tool to fulfill men’s desire. |
“They just thought they could do what they wanted with me, no matter how disgusting. It got to the point where I just went along with things.” said Katie. "Sometimes, there would be up to 10 men in a room waiting for her to satisfy their needs". After a few months in captive, she tried to inform the police regarding the sexual assault. However, much to her dismay, the policemen denied her desperate need of assistance to the extent of threatening her if she brought up her claims again. Katie refused to tell the press about her escape from the organisation since she was diagnosed with anxiety, severe bouts of depression and OCD. To avoid the same event to happen again, Katie’s family decided to change her name and remain anonymous until this day.
Note: Although Katie’s case was 2 years ago, the organisation continues their activity of luring girls into being victims of their sadistic sexual assaults. Their recent activity was to hire a few children to walk around the all-time crowded Oxford Street approaching female teenagers with a note that has an address on it asking them to return the kids back to their parents. |
This article act as an alert to minor girls out there to be careful and to not trust any random men that try to befriend you without any confirmation that they are somewhat related to your family or friends. It is okay to be a social butterfly and befriend with a lot of people, however, individuals must be extra conscious when it comes to the proximity of their relationship with unknown people. In my opinion, people (especially students that are under-aged) should be aware of this situation and take precautions on how to stay safe. It is perfectly normal to be paranoid sometimes. In my opinion as a naturally paranoid person, people should always be aware of their relationship with unknown individuals and make sure to not trust random people that they just met to much. I think it is convenient to always have some sort of defense mechanism like pepper spray whenever you go. If you think that’s too extreme, then, just knowing how to punch is enough to stall you a few minutes to escape dangerous situations.

Duolingo.
Duolingo is a very useful app for learning foreign languages in or out of school. It is available on both iOS and android devices as well as a website that can be easily access through the internet . It is free, no in app purchases and no advertisements. Duolingo determines your level based on a simple test you can do once you open the application or website. This will only takes five minutes. By determining your level, it selects genres, phrases or words that you should learn next. You can learn a lot of new languages like; Spanish, Portuguese, French, Dutch, German, Italian, Danish, Swedish and English. In 2013 duolingo won best app on the Apple Store. I have personally used it before and highly recommend it to anyone who is trying to learn new languages in a short period of time. It is very simple and easy to use. It keeps your progress saved and sets relevant goals for you. One of the best features of the app is the point system, you earn points when answering the questions correctly. It then keeps track of your points. I use the arabic feature to strengthen my mothertongue. It is very effective program. Another useful feature is the reminders, from your settings you can allow the application to send you notifications. The notifications range from reminding you to set your goal or use the application. In conclusion, I think this application includes some great features that help you develop your level, whether you are a beginner or fluent. It can help strengthen your language. By: Mariam (MYP2) |
Le Gouffre (2014)
Genre: Adventure Style: 3D Animation Film length: 10 minutes Directed by: Carl Beauchemin, Thomas Chrétien, David Forest Voice Actors: Nicolas Charbonneaux, Charles-André Gaudreau, Élisabeth Forest Produced by: Lightning Boy Studio "Le Gouffre" is the first animated short film produced and directed by Lightning Boy Studio, a young creative team based in Montreal, Canada. The film tells the story of two spirited travellers who came across an incredibly wide chasm on their journey. Since there are no other route and they refuse to give up, they decided to build a bridge to cross it. Released in February 2015, the project had first gained a lot of attention following the huge success of its Kickstarter campaign, which allowed the creators to finance the movie’s post-production. Many were impressed by the passion and determination of the small team of three animators, who spent more than two full years creating the 10-minute film. The short film production have since then been selected in more than 40 festivals around the world and won six awards, three of them for “Best Animated Short Film”. In my opinion, the story is like an emotional roller coaster, you experience everything from hope, determination, happiness, fear, and everything between, in merely 10 minutes, and that's pretty impressive. Even if the film is short, it succeed in dragging the viewers in and make them a part of this heroically wonderful story. "Le Gouffre" has a unique painterly look that really gives the characters and landscape a new dimension. The music is masterfully employed and it perfectly mirrors the emotion behind the scenes throughout the film. I think that this adventurous tale about what you can achieve through determination and hope, should be seen by everyone Watch the film here: https://vimeo.com/118471437 By: Jackie (DP1) |

DIY
This project is a very functional DIY, you can place your daily used objects or your Halloween stash in it. It only takes a few hours and is a useful thing to have in your room. It is the same concept of last issue’s DIY which is the leaf tea light jar.
(Children from ages 5-6 could do this project with adult supervision)
Materials:
· Artificial leaves
· Mod Podge
· 1 Foam brush or Paintbrush
· 1 Balloon
· Scissors
· 1 bowl
*Try using paper-thin leaves, as they will mould to the shape of your balloon better*
Step 1: If possible, remove the stem of the leaves, as it will help the leaves take shape of the balloon better.
Step 2: Fill your balloon to the size you desire and place it in the bowl
Step 3: Pour some mod podge in a cup and apply some mod podge to the top of your balloon using your brush.
Step 4: Apply a leaf on the top of the wet mod podge and smooth it with the brush or your fingers.
Step 5: Once the leaf is in place, apply some mod podge over it. This will help seal it in place.
Step6: Repeat these steps as many times needed; make sure to cover any empty spaces.
Step 7: When you reach about a quarter of the way down of the balloon, add a few more leaves to the bottom for weight and support.
Step 8: Leave it to dry for a few hours, once dry carefully pop your balloon
Questions you may have:
Can I use real dried leaves?
For this project dried leaves can work, however extra caution is needed so do be careful as the leaves can be extremely brittle.
How long should I leave the mod podge to dry?
It should dry to the touch in an hour and will dry completely in 24hrs.

I think this a very functional and useful DIY that can be used as room décor or for storage purposes. I chose it because it is very nice and is very simple DIY for The fall, much like the tea light leaf jar. I have never done this project but have done something similar using pearler beads, also known as iron on beads.

Little Venice Canal to Camden.
Last week, I went to Camden with my family to celebrate my father’s birthday. Since it was a special occasion, we decided to take the ‘Little Venice Waterbus Company’ trip to Camden. It was an hour journey filled with beautiful views and historical tales accompanied by a summer-like sun with a hint of soft breeze, making it a perfect day for a relaxed family time. I took a few photos of the scenery to save the memory for the future.

When we finally arrived at Camden Lock, I was thrilled to walk along crowded streets with creatively decorated stores that ran along the sides of the road while enjoying the food they offered there. This place is not suitable for people who wanted to buy a lot of things. However, if you are one one of those people who has an undying love for interesting views and photography with a bottomless pit of a stomach that craves cultural foods (like me,) then this is the perfect place for you!

P.S : Here’s a tip, Camden is the perfect place to shop for gothic costumes for the upcoming Halloween. It has everything from stomach-wrenching makeup supplies, scary contact lenses that enhances your character to accessories that makes you rule all the Halloween parties across London! So, if you are aiming for the halloween queen / king, then get your game face on and wear comfortable shoes for the long bumpy ‘early-halloween-shopping ride’ in Camden!
