However, the diversity of different celebrations that are celebrated on new year around the globe adds spice to other celebration commemorating the new's year day. Yes that’s right, a new year is not just celebrated with flashy and explosive fireworks. There are some simple traditions. In this article gives a brief account of the variations of celebrations on the new year’s day,in addition to this the article shows the contrast and the difference between celebrations in Central Europe & North America and many more.I will also talk about how different countries celebrate the first massive event of the year .
Firstly, the United states of America celebrates New Year's Eve with some extravagant food that is supposed to welcome the New Year with open hands. Followed by, of course a classic champagne and wrap it all up with a game of football accompanied by amazing family and friends.
Secondly, in Spain they got creative with their traditions. So whilst some people are popping bottles as the clock strikes twelve, Spanish people actually eat twelve grapes one at each strike of the clock. This tradition has been on for years as it’s supposed to give good luck in the New Year. Maybe you could try this as 2017 comes around… but it's maybe too early to think about that just now. Next up, all the way in South America is Brazil. Brazil is well known for its blazing beaches, while that’s exactly what they do, they party it up. However, apart from that, the New Year in Brazil consists with the feast of Lemenja (African goddess of the sea). The Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro is lit up with candles as huge crowds of people throw offerings into the sea, such as flowers and soaps. Last but certainly not least, just North from South America is North America and Canadians know how to do it big with their parties. They party all the way from one year to another (corny new year joke) with good food, music and people. But not all parts of Canada celebrate new years this way, people in rural parts actually go ice fishing. I mean Canadian’s love for fish is incredible. Now moving forward for the New Year, you might want to consider switching up the new year with different traditions and routines. From that being said Happy New Year, Feliz ano novo and Feliz año nuevo. It’s the beginning of a new term at ICS, it’s almost the 3rd week since the academic second term has started. This is why MYP4 was introduced to a brand new unit in PHE that revolves around health and fitness unit.
In this unit, students will have a beep test before and after the unit. A beep test is a test done to see how fit an individual is. To start this unit, the first sport MYP4 is learning is Capoeira. Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics and music, and is sometimes referred to as a game. It was developed in Brazil mainly by West African descendants with native Brazilian influences, beginning in the 16th century. It is known for quick and complex moves, using mainly power, speed, and leverage for a wide variety of kicks, spins, and highly mobile techniques. MYP4 is a very lucky class to have the opportunity to try something new and interesting. However, it is really hard for the PHE staff to teach a sport like this. It needs flexibility, speed, agility and power to be taught. Although it is really hard to teach, the PHE staff is doing its best. The teachers learn the basic moves before teaching it to the students and when the basics are done, the department will get a professional capoeira master to show MYP4 an entertaining show. Here are some links if you would like to watch some capoeira “battles”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JD18ilKj5R0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8xxgFpK-NM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHshU-8h6qA |
Football.
This week there was quite a bit of sports this week, and I know that because everyone has homework and all, that not everyone has the time to catch up with sports. To start, last week in the Barclays Premier League, there were 10 matches! Exciting right? There were fantastic goals, passes and most importantly, fantastic saves . Spurs vs Sunderland, very easy and comfortable win for the home side. There isn’t much to say on that one, only that Spurs had 70% possession compared to Sunderland’s 30%. The second game was Chelsea vs Everton, the game ended 3-3 all. There was a bit of controversy towards stoppage time in that game, first of Ramiro Funes Mori scored a late one in the 90th minute to make it 3-2 to Everton, when I was watching the game, I thought, there was no way Chelsea were coming back from this one but this is the part where the controversy took place. When Everton were celebrating, they didn’t realise how long they were celebrating for, the celebration lasted for 2 full minutes, when extra time lasted for 3 minutes. But because they were celebrating for so long, I guess the referee felt an injustice towards Chelsea so he let play go on for another 5 minutes, where in the end Chelsea got the latest equaliser possible through John Terry, "Chelsea skipper" which was partly Jon Stones fault. Another thing that we have to speak about, is the Leicester City because they are literally flying right now, Also what do you guys think of the new Premier League logo? It will now be called the ‘Premier League’ instead of the ‘Barclays Premier League’, they decided not to do any more sponsorships. I think it’s pretty cool but I prefer the old logo, this is what it looked like. I got inspired to start for Eye News when I was listening to a football podcast called the ‘Spencer FC Podcast’. Basically the host of program is called Spencer Owen, he is a youtuber and hosts a football based podcast with a bunch of other guests and one of things that they were talking about is how many people don’t actually know what is happening in football. Now for me because I am up to date with a lot of the football, it can be weird sometimes when you have that awkward silence with people sometimes because you don’t know what to say but with some people, we just talk about football maybe sometimes a more generic sense or sometimes we just talk about specific things for about 15 minutes to half an hour, but the best part is that we can debate our opinions if we don’t agree or sometimes we will agree, best of all is that we can just enjoy it. Before, I told you about the Spencer FC podcast, now just incase anyone wants to check out the podcast. Let me tell that this podcast is the most enjoyable podcast because even though it talks a lot about football, it’s just good for a laugh in itself. Here is what you need to do to find the podcast; For Apple Products (Excluding iPod shuffle or nano and Apple Computers)- Go to Podcasts>>Search>>”Spencer FC”>>Subscribe. (Download to listen offline) For Any Computer and Tablet- Check out the link; https://audioboom.com/channel/spencer-fc https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-spencer-fc-podcast/id1063795236?mt=2 Spencer FC’s Youtube Channel; https://www.youtube.com/user/officialfifaplaya By: Manasseh , MYP2. |
Film review.
'Bring him home'.
Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi Film Length: 141 minutes Director: Ridley Scott Writers: Drew Goddard (screenplay), Andy Weir (book) Cast: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig Jeff Daniels, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Sebastian Stan, Donald Glover, Chiwetel Ejiofor Rated: 12A (infrequent strong language, injury in detail) Fun Facts: The film was released the same week NASA found water on Mars. During an evacuation from a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is impaled by an antenna and presumed dead during a fierce sandstorm and left behind by his crew. But Watney against all odds he survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the merciless red planet. With a slowly dwindling food supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and a never-dying spirit to find a way to survive and signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring ‘the Martian’ home. Bonds creates and nations unites on Earth to root for Watney's safe return. While his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. “The Martian” is a newest film by Ridley Scott (his name forever connected with “Alien” and the sci-fi genre), and as expected the film itself is visually stunning. The landscape of Mars looks absolutely breathtaking, and the scenes aboard the Hermes and back on Earth are just as sharp in detail and scope. The way he chose to make this film made it seem alive, almost like an exceptionally made biopic. Matt Damon is absolutely brilliant in this film. He plays Watney with so much optimism that it actually makes the depressing aspect of the film less depressing. However, he truly commits to the drama of the situation. The supporting cast and everyone involved, all do great work as well. The most surprising element about this movie though was the screenplay. Few films get adapted from book to screen so smoothly and seamlessly as “The Martian”. After reading Andy Weir's debut novel, I can testimony that the film keeps the core elements and the refreshing humor. Yes, some events and hardships are omitted and the journey had been shorted down but that’s understandable. The film is hilarious in some parts. In fact,I'd argue that it's funnier than most comedies that I have seen. What makes the movie unique to me was Watney's optimistic point of view. The film in contrast to other sci-fi films such as “Gravity” that’s more dramatic and serious, “The Martian” has a lighter more uplifting and humoristic tone. But when you really think about it, this is a very personal film about different people working together to save one of their own. The unexpected soundtrack also deserves to be mentioned. Similar to “Guardians of the Galaxy” the soundtrack heightens the entertainment value of the film. It’s an unexpected surprise to hear a ABBA song being played in a science-fiction film and ”I Will Survive” have never felt as suitable as it is in this context. http://www.bbfc.co.uk/releases/martian-2015 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3659388/?ref_=nv_sr_1 Jackie - DP1 20/01/2016 |

Short story.
Short Story.
Jump
I look straight into the view the cliff had to offer. The sun disappearing behind the line of mountains over the horizon, tinting the sky with subtle and calming colours of sunset. The sky contrasting itself from the green of trees that littered the ground. The view is indeed, satisfying. If I’m not doing what I’m doing now, the view would’ve been enough for me to sit on the cliff and capture a few pictures while savouring this very moment. However, the disturbing thought of letting go or even stepping forward prevented me from appreciating the magnificent panorama.
I’m about to plunge into a crag. Kilometres beneath this platform lays a cold hard ground that will cause an impact so immense, it could break all my bones and probably cause an internal bleeding to my body. In short, death. I shivered as chills ran down my spine. However, despite the overwhelming fear that had bubbled up inside of me, I had to move on and prove to everyone that I’m capable. I have to mask myself with braveness and hide the coward inside of me in order to be accepted. Yet again, the thought of pulling out and waving the white feather to them seemed nice and horrendous at the same time.
Nonetheless, I took a very deep breath as an attempt to calm myself down. I would be lying if I said I’m ready. Sweat trickled down my forehead as I took a hesitant step towards the edge of the platform while contemplating my life choices. Suddenly, I felt a soft pat on my back that was accompanied by sufficient amount of pressure that urged me forward. Thus, my worst nightmare came to life. The fleeting feeling of being on air and the wind smacking my face on full force was frightening at first. But somehow, this feeling started to grow on me and I started to like this. The affection is enough for me to crave more. I let out a cry of joy and excitement. Bungee jumping might be my next hobby.

FashionOne of this season’s trends are the iconic shoes that have made a comeback, which are platforms. Platforms are shoes with dramatically large soles. In my opinion, these shoes are overly dramatic, and I absolutely can’t stand them! I mean, look at those soles! I believe this trend was initiated when Stella McCartney, a fashion designer, started releasing her line which was mostly made up of platforms. Don’t get me wrong I have nothing against Stella and her designs, in fact I love her unique take on casual chic, but these shoes are too much. On the left is an image of one of Stella McCartney’s platform designs.
