What do students at ICS think of Christmas?
I have asked students from MYP1,2,3 what they think of christmas and if they celebrate it or not!
I have asked students from MYP1,2,3 what they think of christmas and if they celebrate it or not!
The first student is:
Duaa (MYP2): "I don't celebrate christmas but in school we do stuff like secret santa and activities like that. I also love how we go to winter wonderland in the winter time." |
The second student is:
Jerusa (MYP3): "When I think of Christmas, I think of love & everything having to do with positive vibes. As a Christian, Christmas is extremely important to me because Jesus was born on this day. Which means a lot to me in terms of unity within families. For me christmas is that time of the year where you get with your family and celebrate all the magnificent things about life." |
The third person is:
Misha (MYP1): "For me, Christmas is a fun time spent with my family, getting a christmas tree, decorating it and making it look cool is the best part! Christmas is the best part of the year for me" |
The fourth person is:
Sarah (MYP3): "Even though I don’t celebrate christmas ,I think christmas is fun and you get all these presents which makes your day even happier. You might get what you always wished for (maybe not all the time). It’s a day where you and your family gather together and have fun. You get to decorate your house and tree, and you get a holiday for that. Therefor everyone should be happy unless you love the school so much!" |
My opinion on Christmas is that I don’t celebrate it seriously or religiously but I do celebrate it for fun!
For example on christmas I play secret santa with my friends and family, or celebrate it by participating in the activities held in school . On the last day of school we usually have a christmas lunch with christmas crackers and christmas decorations or go to Winter Wonderland wearing christmas jumpers! Christmas reminds me of a celebration that I celebrate as a Muslim which is Eid! Christmas reminds my of Eid because of the gatherings and instead of presents we get money so either way we are happy. There’s no school which is even better so the little things that remind you about the big things that are special to you. |

Did you know? |
I know you have assessments and exams but you still can laugh right? So here are some jokes to keep you happy. I hope you these are funny as much as they are to me. These jokes are so funny and that is why I don’t have a favourite joke. I chose these jokes for you to read because they are school appropriate and hilarious as well.
Teacher: if the lion climbs a tree? Christy: I will jump in the lake and swim Teacher: if the lion also jumps in the water and swims after you? Christy: Teacher, are you on my side or on the lion's?

Below are a couple of mind blowing facts that I found very interesting. The following facts are uncommon among most of the society, but it’s better to know more than you should, right? However, I think that the most shocking fact is the second one since I would never think of such a thing being inserted into a cosmetic product. After being informed about it, I think that’s why most people started to use non-glossy lipstick nowadays.
1. People say ‘Bless you’ to people after they sneeze because your heart stops for a millisecond after the sneeze.
No wonder people always say their blessings to you after you sneeze! Who knew that you’ve just survived a ‘deadly’ occasion when you’re sneezing? Nonetheless, the human heart stops for a millisecond because the body will experience a surge of pressure while sneezing. There’s so much pressure until it causes you heart to stop. Therefore, people often say ‘bless you’ after a person sneezes. 2. Most lipsticks contain fish scales.
Yes, you read it right. Most people would like to believe that their beloved MAC, Estee Lauder or other branded lipstick does not contain the scaly, icky, fish scales and claimed that this fact is a myth. Good news, the cosmetic product does not literally contain fish scales! However, it contains a certain substance called ‘pearl essence’ which originates from fish scales. Why do they use it, you ask? The substance is what gives the lipstick a shiny finish, much like a fish’s scales. A little bit of advice to those who felt disgusted at their pricey lipstick; you might want to stay with matte ones as it doesn’t have a shiny effect. By : Batrisyia-(MYP3)-25/11/2015 |

The Harry Potter film series made Leavesden - which still is a working film studio - it's home for more than ten years. After Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 was released the team behind Warner Bros Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter wanted to preserve and showcase the iconic sets, props and costumes that were created especially for the films so that Harry Potter fans could experience the magic of filmmaking first-hand.
This festive season, Hogwarts in the Snow offers the opportunity to see the Harry Potter film series’ most iconic sets decorated for festive scenes. Hogwarts Great Hall will be lined with eight Christmas trees, decorated with golden baubles and topped with witches on miniature broomsticks, as well as display a replica feast of roast turkeys, hams studded with cherries, flaming Christmas pudding, iced cakes and so on. The Gryffindor common room and Weasley kitchen will also be decorated for the holidays with streamers, Christmas crackers and oranges. For the first time this year, the Goblet of Fire will be ‘lit’ with flames that change from blue to red and a blanket of filmmaking snow - made from a combination of granulated paper and grains of salt - will be hand-sprinkled onto the incredibly-detailed and majestic Hogwarts castle model - created by a team of 80 model makers working for almost seven months. You will also also have the opportunity to touch samples of the different types of ‘snow’ used during production, each selected for its ability to float like falling snow, crunch under foot or catches the light like ice and learn how flames are created without fire. In my opinion the tour is fascinating, extraordinary and gives you a true feel of how the films were made – everything on show is genuine and played some part in the actual films. The work that evidently have gone into the production is mind boggling. It is wonderful to think that all of the sets (Number 4, Privet Drive, The Hogwarts Express etc), props (Wands, The Goblet of Fire etc), animatronic creatures (Backbeat, Aragog, Dobby etc.) and the breathtaking special effects (The door to the Chamber of Secret, Moody’s Trunk etc), featured in the films are on display. The venue have a lot of open spaces in huge rooms with high ceiling and it’s divided into 6 different sections which mean that nobody misses out on anything. Since people are allowed to go where they want in their own pace some more ‘popular’ attraction is often in my experience crowded (riding a broomstick, being inside Hogwarts’s Express) but for the most part the venue can handle the amount of people. I would first and foremost recommend The Making of Harry Potter: Warner Bros Studio Tour to all Harry Potter fans of all age. It is truly extraordinary to see first-hand the sets, costumes, creatures, props, special effects that are in the films and essentially makes the films what they are. This event is also great for all filmmakers since you get knowledge of how they filmed, made the brooms appear to fly, designed the sets, and much, much more. This event have something to offer anyone remotely interested in Harry Potter’s World or filmmaking in general. To find out more please visit: https://www.wbstudiotour.co.uk By: Jackie -(DP1) |

Importance Of Water Purification
According to the United Nations water, six to eight million people die annually from water related diseases and disasters. “Also seven hundred and eighty three million people do not have access to clean water". Water Purification Is needed since five thousand children die from dirty water. A year according to The Guardian (2006) ,Water purification is needed since it will help clean water and stop children from dying and getting water related diseases such as cholera. Without having methods for purifying water, society would not be able to cleanse water from the tap or save money. Including in developing countries they might not have the cleanest water and are forced to drink dirty water. A developing country is a country that needs to become advanced economically and socially.Water available to them even will harm their bodies because water purification is essential to our world today. Water purification methods can save people a lot of money including the save the lives of people. This will help the economy grow if more people get an education they can get jobs and become a developed country. Less people will die each year and not because of water related diseases. I hate it when my brother Charlie has to go away.I hate it when my brother Charlie has to go away.
My parents constantly try to explain to me how sick he is. That I am lucky for having a brain where all the chemicals flow properly to their destinations like undammed rivers. When I complain about how bored I am without a little brother to play with, they try to make me feel bad by pointing out that his boredom likely far surpasses mine, considering his confine to a dark room in an institution. I always beg for them to give him one last chance. Of course, they did at first. Charlie has been back home several times, each shorter in duration than the last. Everytime without fail, it all starts again. The neighbourhood cats with gouged out eyes showing up in his toy chest, my dad’s razors found dropped on the baby slide in the park across the street, mom’s vitamins replaced by bits of dishwasher tablets. My parents are hesitant now, using “last chances” sparingly. They say his disorder makes him charming, makes it easy for him to fake normalcy, and to trick the doctors who care for him into thinking he is ready for rehabilitation. That I will just have to put up with my boredom if it means staying safe from him. I hate it when Charlie has to go away. It makes me have to pretend to be good until he is back. Author : Anonymous(http://www.buzzfeed.com/awesomer/boo-scared-you#.xxBLBav5p ) Opinions. I think that this story is written marvellously by the author. I like the usage of tension building and the realization at the end indicating that the narrator was actually the one who did all the bad things- like putting razors in public places. Maybe because of her younger age than her brother, the parents accused Charlie, the brother of having mental illness that influenced him into doing such things. Therefore, I think that this story is brilliant because the manipulation of tension were used appropriately. Layout is an application developed by Instagram to create unique and fun picture edits. This application allows you to make your own layouts by remixing your personal photos then sharing them with your friends. To create these edits, only a few things are required. First, choose your image or take pictures from the camera option called ‘Photo Booth’ from within the application. After doing so, the application then views different layouts of the images you just chose, this allows you to pick the best layout. Next, there are options to edit the images. You can replace chosen images with different ones, mirror each image based on your preference, flip the images and add a white border between the images. You can also change the sizes of the images by pulling down the handle shown when an image is selected. Other features on the application include; selecting up to 9 images at a time, sharing your images on Instagram and other social networks as well as adding a filter. One of the best things about this application is that you do not need to have an account to use it. This application requires access to your camera roll and camera due to the feature of taking photos from within the app. I have used this application and think that it is very simple and has different options to create cool looking photos from. I really like
the idea of having different options of layouts to chose from because it gives you variations of making the images smaller and larger. In conclusion, this is a very useful and creative application. By: Mariam-(MYP2)-4/12/15 |
Worldwide Fashion.
It’s that time of year again, when it’s almost Christmas, and the most extravagant parties will take place. Dress code of the season: festive. This dress code usually turns up around the holidays on party invitations because it focuses on honouring holidays – which is just the excuse us girls need to dress in expensive clothing that we all secretly know we’ll never wear again. The celebrated holiday is expressed in festive attire through the colours. For example, a Christmas festive outfit is most likely to be made up of the colours red, green, gold, and sometimes blue because these are the colours that are associated with Christmas. A festive dress code is similar to cocktail, but it requires more colour, more creativity, and definitely more sparkle!
According to Vogue, the latest season trend is wearing “electro luxe: sequins”, which means wearing bright and glittering fabrics that, if it were a different time of the year, would have been considered tacky or ‘too much’. The beauty of this season is the freedom it grants both men and women to speak fearlessly through their clothes. Also, when people imagine what women wear to parties, they usually picture a dress and high heels, and traditionally this would be the appropriate attire. However, as time passes this outfit has been repeated over and over again, and now it’s become a cliche. Wearing flat shoes are very elegant and simple to match with an outfit, especially if they are glamorously embellished. This is because it can be coordinated with most outfits for a party where the dress code is ‘festive’, and they won’t go to waste because they can also be casually worn on jeans.

The images above demonstrate the ‘electro luxe: sequins’ season trend. In my opinion, these outfits are very dressy and elegant, and they allow people to stand out from a crowd. I especially like that the first three outfits are more conservative, and they are not as revealing as the clothes that society expects us to wear.
