In-school sports
Volleyball the worldwide popular sport in ICS.
Last week, MYP4’s and MYPP2’s began studying the new volleyball unit. They started off by learning the techniques and testing their skills. Mr. Samir and Mr. Richard made a great effort in demonstrating the techniques (as usual) which made it easier for the students to learn and master those techniques easier and quicker. As an MYP4 student, I have never practised volleyball before, but it seems to be such a fun sport. As you get to play with your friends, you play with any body part you have and the main goal is sending the ball next side before it touches the ground. Where the net sport aim is preventing the ball from touching the ground on your team’s side and trying to make it touch the ground on your opponent’s side to score. However, the game doesn’t get fun unless the players are capable of keeping the game going for more than a minute. This was really hard to achieve in our first games but then after practising more it was much easier and more fun. Now that we learned the techniques and some of the rules, we will start applying to all professional rules and how to play volleyball properly. For example, knowing where to serve from and when to start the game over, also the number of players allowed to touch the ball in each side and so on. All in all, I think volleyball is a really entertaining sport as it is played nearly everywhere and the rules are pretty easy.

Application Review.
Bandsintown is a very useful and organized application. The purpose of this application is to notify you whenever your favourite celebrities are on tour. It tracks the celebrities in your device’s music library or celebrities your follow from within the application. This application is available on both IOS and Android devices without any purchases needed. It sends you alerts when your celebrities are holding concerts near your location. This application holds many great features that makes planning to go to concerts much easier.
Personally, I think one of the best features is the purchasing option. This option redirects you to trusted ticket sellers where you can purchase tickets to your chosen concert. Recently, the creators of the application added an option where you can purchase tickets directly from the application. Sharing with other users whether you are attending or not attending the concert and share concerts with your friends are examples of other features available on the app.
I think this is a good and reliable application. I personally use this app and think that it is simple and informative. It tells you where your tracked celebrities are playing near your location. In addition, the location services; allows users to adjust the distance of the concert venues. This is useful because it will only show you concerts near your location or your customized distance. I think one feature that needs improvement is the signing up feature. To use this application, you need to register an account. You can do so by linking it to your Facebook account or email. I think that this is not a good feature because several individuals might not want their mailbox getting spammed with emails or using their emails to sign up for things like so. In conclusion, I think this is a convenient and good application for getting information on your favourites celebrities concerts.

World News:
Paris Bombing.
Recently, there was series of appalling catastrophes that happened in Paris, France, causing more than 157 fatalities. It was reported that the very first event that started the terrorising apocalypse was the explosion near Stade de France, where a friendly match of the French football team against the world renowned Germany took place. Allegedly, it is said that two anonymous individuals were secretly carrying a ticking bomb on them while blending in among the spectators. The disheartening threats of terrorism was followed closely by reports of shooting near Petit Cambodge restaurant which is approximately less than 9 kilometres away from where the bombing took place. Then, another serious explosions broke out at Bataclan theatre adding more oil into the fire thus resulting more chaos among the French residents. Consequently, the death toll caused by the events has been skyrocketing since then. The Police Department suspected that the bombing was mostly caused by a group of terrorists disguising themselves as one of the foreign tourists while wearing ‘suicide belts’ which has several bombs embedded inside. As a result the security forces could not detect the dangerous items that they were carrying. In my opinion, the society should consider their social responsibility support what had happened in Paris. Countries such as Britain and The United States said their condolence and had agreed to support France in terms of money and collaboration on armies. Considering that the government already made their move, people should also show their support by spreading this depressing news and raise awareness among the society using various ways. One of the trending posts on social networking sites are the ‘#prayforparis’. We should always support countries that are undergoing huge crisis in order to protect the peace and freedom that we currently have. Otherwise who knows, World War 3 might happen next. The Help
Author: Kathryn Stockett Genre: Historical, Fiction Suitable: 15+ “Three ordinary women are about to take one extraordinary step....” Set in Jackson, Mississippi in the early 1960s, right when the Civil rights Movement began, 'The Help' by Kathryn Stockett shows the peak of racial segregation. The book details the life of three very different women; Minny is a fierce, sassy black cook who doesn't take nonsense from anyone, even when it risks her employment. Aibileen, an experience black maid who is raising her 'seventeenth white child' whilst nursing the hurt caused by her own son's tragic death, and then there’s Miss Skeeter - at the opposite end of the spectrum - a white woman who’s an aspiring writer. She had been brought up by black maids, and longs to find out why her much-loved and missed maid, Constantine, has disappeared. When Miss Skeeter have the idea of writing a book about the dreadful life that the help lives, the three very different women teamed up and the help reveals the cruel and unbelievable experiences they have faced whilst working for the white people who discriminate them. Their forbidden friendship pose a huge risk for the help, if it’s revealed, they could be fired immediately. I think Kathryn Stockett managed to perfectly mix fact and fiction, exploring different emotions ranging from sadness to happiness - sometimes all in the same paragraph. It’s a thought provoking, captivating page turner but at times it’s emotionally hard to keep on reading. Stockett has not only succeeded to write an unforgettable, at times humorous and all-around brilliant story; this is also an informative masterpiece, educating people about life of the help in the segregated society of Jackson, Mississippi in the early 1960s, using some of her personal experiences of growing up in the deep south. This brilliant book made me reevaluate and examine my own morals, I will certainly never forget it. Even though I think it would benefit everyone to once in their life read ‘The Help’. I can’t recommend this book for anyone younger than at least 15 years old, due to the nature of the story, the expletive language and graphic scenes portraying violence. By: Jackie- (DP1) |

Short stories.MIND THE GAP.
Life as an adult. What is it? How is it? Exhausting, that’s what I would say. Having to live a lonely life doing repetitive routines every single day that would just put more weight onto my shoulders is boring. Freaking boring. Yes, that’s exactly what happens after you turn 18. Parties? Alcohol? Being able to dress up on halloween and go trick or drinking? Yeah these things would only last for 3 months until reality decides to smack you on the face with a brick waking yourself up from a carefree dream. Before you know it, the only upbeat in a song that I like to call adulthood is being able to watch 18+ movies and buy explicit magazines. I’m basically on autopilot most of the time. Like every other days in my life, I’m sitting on a seat in a train with thoughts running rapidly through my head, waiting for the next stop to arrive after a long, dull day at work. I look around to my surroundings registering the fact that there’s only one other person besides me who’s sitting at the other end of the compartment. Typical. Who would want to take a train at - - I glanced at my wrist watch, - - 12: 45 a.m? Oh, I know. A weird, thug-looking guy wearing a ‘V for Vendetta’ costume and a 25 year old, bleary-eyed accountant with a supposed to be brunette hair but is grey instead(Do notice the sarcasm). The monotonous female voice on the train announcing that the last destination will arrive brought me out of my trance. “We have arrived at Queensway Station.” Heaving a long sigh, I rise from my temporary dwelling and drag my feet one after another towards the doors to exit the train. I look back towards the tube expecting the mysterious unknown man to walk out of the doors with his ‘swagger Mc.Jagger’ walk that every other kids seem to imitate. Much to my dismay, the man is nowhere to be found. Like a rag doll controlled by its owner, I move forwards with a slouching back while humming ‘Thriller’ by Michael Jackson. As I was about to reach for my century year old phone in my pocket, sounds of footsteps behind me echo through the room accompanied by a blow of harsh wind making me immediately whip around. No one. Beads of sweat starts to form on my forehead and my heart thumping out of my chest like hell’s about to break lose as I walk faster towards the exit. Is that a ghost? No, of course not. Is that the man before? Is he following me for money? Is he trying to kill me? NO! I’m too young to die! A bloody-murder scream broke through me as I heard a booming voice, “Mind the gap, Mind the gap”. BY: Batrisyia- (MYP3) -10/10/2015. |
DIY
Customised mug.
This DIY is about customised mugs. This is such a cute and fun DIY for wintertime. It makes drinking coffee, tea, or hot chocolate more fun. Using only a few materials and your imagination, you can transform a plain mug into a simple yet creatively stylish product that is much to your liking. These designs are permanent and dishwasher safe. You can use this idea to customize other porcelain objects.
|
|
Step 5: Using a pencil, trace over your design. This will transfer the lead on the mug making it easier to draw your design using the markers. Make sure to apply large amounts of pressure so this can be accomplished. it is best to use a blunt pencil so the pressure would not cause any damage to the pencil.
|
Step 9: After 24 hours, place the mugs inside the oven for 30 minutes at 425°F or 220°C. DO NOT PREHEAT YOUR OVEN. Start your timer after the temperature of the oven has reached 425°F or 220°C.
(Different brands may vary in temperatures of baking, please read the instructions on your porcelain or oil based markers beforehand) |
Questions you may have
Why do I need to use oil based markers or porcelain markers?
Using oil based or porcelain markers ensure that your design will stay on your mug for a long time.
Why can’t I preheat my oven?
By doing so, the mugs will gradually heat up as the temperature increases in the oven. This will prevent the mugs from cracking or breaking because of sudden temperature change.
Why can’t I take the mugs out the oven when the time is up?
If the mug is taken out the oven instantly, it is more likely that they will crack because of the temperature change. By leaving them the mug in the oven, its temperature is gradually decreasing with the ovens temperature.
Why do I need to wait 24 hours before baking the mug?
Waiting approximately 24 hours prevents the mug design from cracking whilst it’s baking.
Where can I purchase porcelain pens or oil based sharpie pens?
You can purchase porcelain pens or oil based sharpie pens online or from craft stores like Hobby Craft or Cass Art.

My opinion.
I think this is a wonderful DIY for winter. i love how you can customize the mugs to fit your personality and liking. I think this is a very good idea that has many applications on ceramics ,glass and other porcelain objects. You can use this idea these materials but using markers designed for that material. Additionally, I also like how there is a wide variety of colours of the porcelain pens or oil based sharpie pens that can be used. I have not tried this DIY before but would love to when I get the chance. It is so easy and customizable. The only negative thing about this DIY is time consuming. I think this affects if you would like to create this DIY as some people prefer to do quick and easy DIYs rather than time consuming DIYs.
